Full disclosure: I’m a Patreon supporter so I saw 3.10 a day early, so I’ve had time to digest it, and I’m writing this before the public update.

Spoilers below in case you haven’t read 3.10 yet.

I can’t speak for all writers, but I know that for me, as I’m writing a story, there is A Scene (or group of scenes) I have in my head from the word “go,” a moment I am always writing toward. A turning point, a key plot element, an instant of emotional breakthrough.

I think that 3.10, and possibly 3.9 and 3.11, is that moment for Jack and Bitty’s relationship.

The shit just got real, yo.

Until now, they’ve been sort…playing Relationship, like kids play house. Not that it wasn’t real, but it was a fantasy. I like you, you like me, we’ll kiss, have sex probably, cook together, even say I love you, but it’s still a bit like the relationship equivalent of summer camp.

But no longer. Not anymore. Jack doesn’t want Bitty putting on a happy face for his comfort, he wants to know how he’s feeling. Bitty can believe now that he’s a priority in Jack’s life, that he’s not less important than hockey. They’re in this together, they’ll handle things together, whatever happens, they’re facing it together. They’re not boyfriends anymore, they’re partners. As Jack said, they’re a team. They have each other’s backs. This just became a real, adult relationship.

Bitty’s lip trembled when he heard Jack’s words because he was going to try again to deflect, to take all the pain and sacrifice on to himself, to protect Jack from the difficulties and put on a happy face which IS WHAT HE ALWAYS DOES ABOUT EVERYTHING. He takes care of everyone and nobody takes care of him. But when he fell into Jack’s arms, he gave up. He’s letting Jack take care of him now, he’s giving over some of the burden in a way he’s never let himself do because he never thought anyone would care for him enough to shoulder their part. He never thought he was enough. But now he believes it. Jack doesn’t just love him as long as he’s happy and smiling and baking pies and not making any demands. Jack loves him for real, in a way he’s probably not let himself hope for, because he never thought he’d be worthy of it, especially from someone like Jack.

But now he knows the truth - that to Jack, he is worth more than anything else. Even hockey.

And now they can go forward with that security.
